Happy birthday, B. You would have been 31 today, While it’s been nearly 19 years since you left us, not a day passes that I do not think about you in some capacity or another. I miss you terribly even while life has continued with all its wonderment and joy. Being your mom for such a short time has provided a sharper appreciation for each day.

M and I took a huge step this morning in our grown-up lives: we met with an attorney to set-up our wills, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and trust documents for disposition of our assets. Ours will be a fairly simple estate – everything will go to G and C. Having spent the last 2 years wrangling with my mother’s estate and the probate process, I have a particular appreciation for not putting them through it and taking care of the paperwork now, while we are still healthy and of sound mind.

We joke that once we have everything signed and in place, we are likely to live forever. Now we just need to make it through next week when the documents will be ready to review and sign.

This task has me thinking about our household inventory, that it’s time to go through and update it. In the event of a theft, fire, or other disaster we will hopefully be able to identify replacement value for insurance purposes. Most of our stuff is on the inventory, but we have different cell phones, iPads, computers, and a new digital camera to update on the lists. Probably many other things to be added and/or deleted in the great “stuff” purge that has been going on around here. A weekend task, for sure.
